Surviving Cold & Flu Season: A Mom’s Guide to Keeping Kids Healthy and Happy
Ah, cold and flu season—the time of year when every mom’s worst nightmare comes true. One kid gets the sniffles, and suddenly, your entire household is trapped in an endless cycle of coughs, fevers, and mystery mucus. You start questioning everything: Did I wash their hands enough? Did that one innocent birthday party unleash chaos? Am I living in a never-ending science experiment of germs? The answer is probably yes to all of the above. But don’t worry, mama, we’ve got your back. Here’s how to get through the season with your sanity (mostly) intact.
1. Boosting Immunity Naturally
Let’s talk about DEFENSE. No, not the kind you need when your toddler throws a sippy cup at your head—your body’s natural immune defense. Prevention is key, and that starts with:
• Whole Foods & Nutrients: You can’t out-supplement a bad diet. Load up on real, nutrient-dense foods—bone broth, fresh fruits and veggies, organic meats, and healthy fats. Bonus: Your kids might actually eat some of these if you blend them into a smoothie and call it a “special drink.”
• Hydration, Hydration, Hydration: Dehydrated kids are cranky kids. Water, herbal teas, and homemade electrolyte drinks keep their little systems running smoothly. If they refuse plain water, try adding a splash of fresh juice. Or, if desperation hits, serve it in a “fancy” cup (because somehow, a straw makes everything magical).
• Sunshine & Fresh Air: Yes, even when it’s cold. Bundle them up and send them outside—vitamin D is essential for immune function. Plus, a little outdoor play helps burn off the energy that would otherwise be spent turning your living room into a disaster zone. We let our middle guy play on the front deck in the snow yesterday and he entertained himself for over 20 minutes, AND it led to a NAP! Which he rarely ever takes anymore, so outside is good.
• Sleep is the Ultimate Medicine: I know, I know—convincing a toddler to go to bed is harder than negotiating world peace. But their immune system does its best work while they’re asleep. Create a cozy bedtime routine and stick to it like your life depends on it (because it kind of does). We've added a little "swing" in our house to rock them for a bit before bed, then it's books and bedtime with their favorite water cup nearby.
2. Creating a Non-Toxic, Immune-Friendly Home
Your home should be a haven, not a place where toxins lurk. Many mainstream household cleaners, air fresheners, and even baby products contain harsh chemicals that can weaken immunity. Here’s how to clean up your space (without losing your mind or going overly CRUNCHY):
• Ditch Artificial Fragrances: Those “fresh linen” candles? Yeah, they’re basically chemical warfare. Swap them for essential oil diffusers or simmer cinnamon sticks and citrus peels on the stove for a natural, cozy scent.
• Air Quality Matters: Dry indoor air can irritate airways and make kids more susceptible to colds. A humidifier with a drop of eucalyptus oil can work wonders. We use one every night near each of their beds! We've recently upgraded to air purifiers, one large on downstairs and a small one for the bedrooms.
• Safe Skincare is a Must: When their noses get raw from all that wiping, skip the petroleum-based junk and reach for our OG Balm—packed with only the good stuff for soothing chapped skin naturally.
3. Recognizing Early Symptoms & Natural Remedies
The moment you hear that first cough, it’s go-time. Catching illness early can mean the difference between a mild sniffle and a full-blown snot tsunami.
• Honey for Coughs: Nature’s medicine. A spoonful of raw honey (for kids over one) works better than most store-bought cough syrups. Bonus: They think it’s a treat.
• Elderberry Syrup for Immune Support: Packed with antioxidants and known for its ability to help reduce the severity and duration of colds, elderberry syrup is a must-have in the mom arsenal. Plus, kids love the naturally sweet taste!
• Steam & Saline for Congestion: Steam baths with a little eucalyptus or a saline nasal rinse can help clear out the gunk. Just be prepared for some dramatic resistance if you try to rinse a toddler’s nose. No bath? No problem. Turn your shower on nice and hot and let it steam up for a few minutes with the doors closed. We give them a few toys and they play away from the water while it keep steaming for a few minutes then we turn it down and let them wash up.
• Gut Health = Immune Health: Probiotics and fermented foods support a strong immune system. Think yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut—yes, really. (Okay, maybe not the sauerkraut for toddlers, but we can dream.) Unless your Harper, our oldest who loves sauerkraut for some odd reason!
4. Comfort & Care for Sick Kids
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, they still get sick. So, what now?
• Keep Them Cozy: Warm baths with natural soaks, like our upcoming magnesium + lavender bath additive, help relax little bodies and ease discomfort.
• Hydration is Key: Offer herbal teas, warm broth, or even a fun popsicle made from 100% juice. Desperate times call for creative measures.
• Protect Their Skin: Constant nose-wiping can lead to raw, irritated skin. Our Diaper Balm isn’t just for tushies—it also works wonders on chapped cheeks and noses.
5. Supporting Mom Through the Season
Mom, let’s be real—you can’t pour from an empty cup. You need to take care of yourself, too.
• Nourish Yourself: When’s the last time you ate something other than your kid’s leftover crust? Make sure you’re eating real food, drinking enough water, and getting enough sleep (or at least, as much as possible).
• Ask for Help: If you have a partner, family, or a good mom-friend tribe, lean on them. You don’t have to do it all alone.
• Find Your Community: Speaking of tribes—surrounding yourself with like-minded moms who prioritize holistic health makes all the difference. That’s why we created events like our recent Tallow Tots Gathering at Claudette’s in Howard Beach, Queens. Hosted alongside the amazing Arina Mulhausen, this sold-out event brought together 25 like-minded moms for a night of good food, goodie bags, guest speakers, raffles, and connection. Because let’s be honest—sometimes, we just need a night out with women who get it.
Final Thoughts
Cold and flu season is rough, but it doesn’t have to take you down. With a little preparation, a few natural remedies, and a solid support system, you’ll make it through in one piece. And remember—you’re doing an amazing job, even when it feels like all you do is wipe noses and reheat your coffee.
